Richard Neutra, FAIA, Architect
The Hailey House, 1959
3319 Tareco Drive
Los Angeles 90068
Perched in the East Hollywood Hills, the Jason Hailey House is a Richard Neutra masterpiece, restored with reverence and creativity. Completed in 1959, the residence remains intact, thanks to owners who resisted altering its modernist bones.
Guided by archival research, project manager Barbara Lamprecht—architectural historian and author of Neutra: Complete Works (Taschen), in which the home appears—led the restoration with Los Angeles artist Anthony Barsoumian and Andrew Gray Studio. Their work preserved Neutra’s vision while making thoughtful updates for contemporary living.
Every Philippine mahogany panel and redwood detail was revived, while discreet enhancements—glass balcony railings, refreshed kitchen and baths, and a neutral palette—bring clarity to the interiors. Flexible walls adapt spaces, and floor-to-ceiling glass frames sweeping views, connecting indoors with landscape. The home balances mid-century character—from built-ins to cinematic influences—with modern sophistication, creating a space both inviting and elegant. Designed for entertaining, it stands as a true expression of California modernism: efficient, graceful, timeless.
Beyond the interiors, gardens by Studio John Sharp extend the modernist ethos into nature. Known for meditative, sustainability-driven landscapes, Sharp shaped outdoor spaces as an oasis for entertaining or retreat. Sculptural plantings with architectural pottery define the front garden, leading to shaded back terraces with dining, a fire pit, and a small theater. Secluded corners invite reflection.
