Today, the Hailey Residence by Richard Neutra is cared for by Patrick, who has approached ownership with a deep respect for the home’s original intent. From the beginning, the goal was never to modernize or reinterpret the house, but to understand it how it was meant to function, how it was meant to feel, and how its spirit could be preserved through thoughtful care. The home is treated as something to live in and enjoy, while still honoring its architectural significance.
A key part of that process was working with architectural historian Barbara Lamprecht, whose deep knowledge of Neutra’s work helped guide restoration decisions. Her research brought clarity to original materials, details, and design intent, ensuring each choice was informed by history rather than assumption. This collaboration helped keep the restoration grounded, avoiding unnecessary changes and focusing instead on what truly mattered to the integrity of the house.
The restoration itself was intentionally restrained. Original elements were repaired rather than replaced whenever possible, with updates handled quietly so they wouldn’t distract from the architecture. Light, openness, and the seamless connection between inside and out, hallmarks of Neutra’s design, were brought back into focus. The result is a home that feels calm, warm, and lived in, showing how sensitive ownership and careful research can keep an important modernist house both relevant and authentic.
