We bought a house in the German countryside.
Old, charming, full of character. Exactly what we were looking for.

But then… the little things started adding up.

It began with a pile of old wood in the shed, in the garage.
Then we noticed tiny holes in our tools.
The garage walls.
The furniture someone “kindly” left behind tucked underneath shelves hidden from sight.

We moved on, to the house, truly not expecting more. We had two people inspect our house before we bought it. Surely they would have seen something…

But even our beloved floorboards weren’t safe. The ones that made me fall in love with the house in the first place.

We kept digging—literally—hoping we were wrong.
But by the time we reached the attic, the truth was impossible to ignore.

Wood worms. I never even heard of them until now.

This is the part no one talks about when they say “just buy an old house in Europe, it’ll be cute!”
It’s cute, alright.
Until it starts falling apart from the inside out.

The last few weeks has been a pure rollercoaster of chest crushing anxiety and emotions spiralling.

It well be fine. Probably.

Drop all your wood worm tips for us to learn, and follow us on our journey of old home ownership in Germany!
