The Korowai live in one of the remotest parts of West Papua, accessible only by walking for many hours through leech infested swamps. Plagued by flies and mosquitoes, we have recorded in detail the last family still retaining the skills needed to build these remarkable treehouses.
The origin of these buildings is unknown, but they provide a space to live above the swampy air of the forest, full of biting insects, and at a height most predators, including human, cannot reach. They are built rarely built these days, almost for fun, and most of their houses are on stilts, at around 3-4m off the ground, which is much more practical (which you can see at the start of the video). However, it is the high treehouses that have fascinated visitors to the region for several hundred years.

A dying art, this may be the last one, as almost all Korowai have now settled into government provided housing in towns and villages along the banks of the many rivers that flow through the region.
