Russia is seeking to expand military cooperation with the Nicolás Maduro regime in Venezuela amid a potential US operation in the South American country, thereby openly demonstrating hostile intentions towards the West. First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Alexei Zhuravlev told Russian media that Moscow supplies Caracas with a wide range of weapons and is ready to transfer the latest Russian Oreshnik system. He claimed there are no restrictions on such supplies, and that Russia is allegedly "supporting a friendly country" in its standoff with the United States.
Zhuravlev emphasized that Venezuela receives virtually its entire range of weapons from Russia , from small arms to aircraft. Among the systems already transferred, he named Su-30MK2 fighter jets, which form the backbone of the country's air force, as well as S-300VM, Antey-2500, Pantsir-S1, and Buk-M2E anti-aircraft missile systems. All deliveries, according to the deputy, are classified, which, as he put it, "could come as an unpleasant surprise to the Americans." The Oreshnik system is a new Russian strategic development, which dictator Putin and his entourage are fond of using to intimidate the West. Moscow could use the transfer of such weapons to Venezuela as an instrument of additional pressure on the US and NATO. This decision demonstrates that Russia has no plans to de-escalate and is raising the stakes. In essence, the Kremlin is trying to repeat the Cold War scenario, creating hotbeds of tension on the US border by supplying weapons to regimes that openly oppose the West.
As previously reported that Russia sent a military transport plane to Venezuela amid the escalating situation with the United States. Defense News reported that a Russian Il-76 military transport aircraft, previously used by Moscow to transport weapons and mercenaries for Russia, landed in Caracas. The aircraft is operated by Aviacon Zitotrans, a company under US sanctions. The arrival of the aircraft coincided with Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro's appeal to Russia for military assistance.
Recall, United States is strengthening its military presence in the Caribbean region: a military group of 16,000 troops has been sent to the shores of Venezuela. It includes eight surface warships, a nuclear submarine, and aircraft – a B-52 strategic bomber and F-35 fighter jets, writes The Washington Post . A carrier strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, accompanied by five ships, is also involved in the operation. The deployment of these forces to the Caribbean was announced on October 24. At the time, the White House explained the move as a need to strengthen counter-narcotics efforts in the region. Observers believe the large-scale concentration of forces indicates that the administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to expand operations in the region, with the possibility of launching strikes on Venezuelan territory.
