The temple's architecture includes a small opening that acts as a pinhole, allowing light to enter and create an inverted image of the tower on the wall. This is called a camera obscura effect. The inverted image of the 52-meter-high gopuram (gateway) appears on the wall of the Saalu Mantapa, which is about 300 feet away. The pinhole camera effect is considered a marvel that demonstrates the advanced science and technology of ancient people. The Virupaksha Temple is the only intact temple among the surrounding ruins and is still used for worship.
Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
