My parents took me to court for buying a house. I was 26 years old when I finally saved enough for a down payment on a small three-bedroom house in my hometown. I was so proud and excited to show my parents, thinking they'd be happy for me. Instead, my mom's face went cold and my dad said "You can't buy that house." Confused, I asked why and they explained they'd been planning to buy it as an investment property to rent out for passive income. They demanded I cancel my offer immediately. When I refused, they threatened to sue me for "stealing their opportunity." I thought they were blowing off steam, but two weeks later I got served with actual legal papers claiming I'd interfered with their business deal and demanding $50,000 in damages for lost rental income they never even had. Their lawyer argued I'd known about their interest in the property because my mom had mentioned liking houses in that neighborhood months ago. The judge looked at them like they were insane and dismissed the case in ten minutes, calling it frivolous. But they didn't stop - they showed up at my new house demanding I sell it to them at my purchase price. When I said no, they turned the whole family against me, saying I was selfish and ungrateful. I haven't spoken to them in three years. Last month they tried reaching out saying they were proud of my "little starter home." I just replied "Get a lawyer if you want to talk to me."
