When a room is being used as bedroom - no matter its location - it must have egress - a direct way to the exterior. This is in case of an emergency such as a fire. Not only do the people inside need a way out, but emergency crews need a way in to make a rescue if necessary. The most common egress is a window and even then the window has to meet certain requirements such as:

• The bottom of the egress window opening can not exceed 44” from the finished floor.
• The minimum opening area of the egress window should be a minimum of 5.7 square feet.
• The minimum egress window opening height should be a minimum of 24” high.
• The minimum egress window opening should be a minimum of 20” wide.
