How An Architect Designed a Timeless Family Home (House Tour)

Renovated by Avenue Studios as well as Lowi Interiors, The New Traditional serves as a great example of how an architect designed a timeless family home. First built in the mid-20th century, the home uses existing design work to aid modern family living.

Set in Woolooware – a leafy suburb near the iconic Cronulla Beach – The New Traditional is well-connected to the outdoors. Overlooking a fresh garden and two pools, the home offers the ideal calm ambience when considering how an architect designed a timeless family home. “The original house was built in the ‘50s and, like many houses of this era, had numerous additions that confused the identity and functionality of the home,” says Victoria Vine, architect at Avenue Studios. In contrast, the new home champions both traditional detailing and modern function.

Upon entering The New Traditional, residents are shown the beginnings of how an architect designed a timeless family home: a curved steel staircase, a deep arch ahead of the living area, a guest suite and children’s rooms. While the spaces kept for guests include a bright ensuite and walk-in wardrobe, the children’s bedrooms are elevated by mezzanines reimagined as play areas. The main bathroom, sitting next to the previous bedrooms, features timber-look herringbone tiles and natural marble mosaics. At the end of the initial archway, the living room faces north. “There's an abundance of natural light in the main living space, with skylights over the kitchen and dining areas,” says Vine. “A large arched window looks from the kitchen out to the pool, which is an important aspect for the family.” The kitchen sees natural brass tapware and an engineered stone splashback enhance the elegance of shaker-style cabinetry and exposed timber beams.

Ascending a level, residents enter a second living space lit by a skylight. The main bedroom is also housed on this level, tucked at the rear of the home. Quiet and tranquil, the space adjoins a serene ensuite that utilises the tiles found in the main bathroom. As well as featuring a freestanding tub, the bedroom suite gives access to a rooftop garden with views stretching to the edge of a golf course. To further increase the sense of harmony with the outdoors, Avenue Studios also designs an alfresco living area. As the existing pool is retained, the alfresco area is protected by a curved roof that echoes the sweep of the pool balustrade. A new oval spa bath then enhances the amenity of the remaining square footage. Across the site, the landscaping testifies to how an architect designed a timeless family home, highlighting the gentle contours of the house. “From the rear yard, you can see how the arched steel window and the curved roof soften the angular roof form,” says Vine.

Evidencing how an architect designed a timeless family home, The New Traditional exceeds the functionality of the 1950s house. With bold materials and cleverly planned spaces, Avenue Studios and Lowi Interiors honour the story of the home in a way that pleases the modern-day resident.
