Did you know that Toronto had the tallest building in the British Empire in the early 1900s?

The Trader's Bank Building was built in 1906 and at 15 stories it was the tallest in the Commonwealth.

This neo-classical building caused a lot of controversy in the city, with residents and intellectuals opposing the idea of skyscrapers in Toronto. The City Architect promised it would not be a trend and imposed strict height limits... which didn't last and The Traders' Bank was shortly overtaken by taller buildings.
