California-based firm Holder Parlette Architecture places landscaping high on their list of priorities when designing a home. As for the Sonoma Ridge Residence that sits atop a mountain in Sonoma, they preserved as many oak trees as possible onsite.

Co-Founder and Principal Architect of Holder Parlette, Kenneth Holder, says "When you arrive at a site like this, you see these magnificent old-growth oak trees with their own incredible sculptural beauty, their own elegance. When you're doing initial sketching and initial studies, you can't help but be influenced by the organic nature of the site."

By adding large panels of glass where possible, the threshold between indoor and outdoor gets blurred.

The home has a central spine that leads from the front door down a subtle slope towards the view of Sonoma County. The house takes references from the agrarian structures of the region and incorporates them into its materiality - wood, strong metal, and concrete.
