Architecture in Modernity is about creating abstract maps and models.

Modernism created objective maps and models of the world. Science creates concepts and creates one-to-one maps between ideas and objective data.

In the same way science maps the physical world around us, architects use scientific mapping techniques in their work. Architecture became about creating complex maps and models. The main purpose of going to architecture school is learning to create maps and models of the built environment. Architects are taught to use models of buildings and cities to meet the functional requirements of people and institutions.

In architecture, maps and models are overlayed over the built environment, making it impossible to tell what is real and what is man-made. In other words, the built environment is a simulation.

This social map overlays over the natural and built environments to create a new meta environment. Digital simulations will control how we live in our natural and built environments.

Architecture in Postmodernity is about taking abstract social maps and models and using them to design the built environment.

Social map such as zoning and place names define how we use space in cities.

The main question for architects is how can we use social maps and models in architecture?
